Gold Bounces Back From Bodog Termination
Bodog has terminated their endorsement relationship with 2006 World Series of Poker Main Event Champion Jamie Gold. Susan Mainzer, the Senior Media Relations Manager at Bodog marketing company Riptown.com Media, explains “In light of our decision to cease all offline marketing initiatives in the U.S., and instead refocus our efforts on growing our entertainment brand in Europe and Asia, Bodog has ended our business relationship with Jamie Gold. Bodog has enjoyed our association with Mr. Gold and wishes him the best of luck in his future endeavors.”
Poker Pros David Williams, Josh Arieh, and Evelyn Ng are still members of Team Bodog. Are other endorsement deals in jeopardy as a result of the online poker legal shakedown or was this an opportunity to dump Gold? Gold has had his fair share of controversy since winning the WSOP Main Event. Gold was sued by a former business partner for half of his recent $12 Million win. Gold was also accused of padding his resume by claiming to have represented James Gandolfini (The Sopranos), Lucy Liu (Charlie’s Angels), Jimmy Fallon (Saturday Night Live), and Felicity Huffman (Desperate Housewives), among others. It appears he may have been an assistant at the agency that represented these stars instead of their actual agent. There was even a controversy as to the size of the tip Gold gave the dealer after winning the World Series of Poker Main Event.
Despite the controversy, Gold is bouncing back well. He is one of the early chip leaders on day one at the 2007 World Poker Tour Borgata Poker Classic. Only a couple of hours into day one, Gold is in second place and has run his stack up to 62k. The five-day event started the day with 569 entrants. They are playing for a prize pool of $5,529,000. Early bust outs include Mike “The Mouth” Matusow, Kido Pham, and Amir Vahedi.
